Repair the tired and cracked base of your grain bins

Grain bins are similar to slab garages. They do not have a good solid foundation that goes below the frost line. The bases are nothing more than a large floating slab, allowing them to move and settle.

After a bin is put into use, the tremendous weight of the grain stored inside forces the slab to settle and crack over a period of years. As this occurs, it creates new places for rodents and insects to gather and live happily, with all the food they can handle. This is unsafe and unhealthy, not to mention the damage caused to the grain.

Grain quality will not improve during storage. At best, it will only maintain it's initial quality. Items that adversely affect grain quality include, among other factors: 1) harvesting, handling, and storage equipment, and 2) insect, mold and rodent control. An effective management program greatly enhances the likelihood of maintainingtop quality grain.

Grain bin maintenance prior to storage lays the foundation for maintaining and preserving good quality grain during storage. Prior to storage, inspect for cracks in the slab or rodent holes around the base. Also check for settlement that has caused the base to become separated from the bin itself. If this has occurred, drying air that would normally be forced through the grain can escape from the bin, and rodents have free access without even the inconvenience of a traffic signal. This separation also causes anchor bolts to pull loose.

If you are effected by any of these issues, give us a call. We would be happy to provide you with a written proposal for the necessary repairs. We drill holes through the base and pump grout under the base that fills any voids, and returns the base to an “as close to original position as possible”. Although the base may not be exactly to it's original position, we have an excellent rate of success of getting them real close. The bases are in much better shape because the voids are full and they are stabilized. After this process is complete, we recommend the cracks be sealed. This as another service we provide.
